I began by assigning their Unit III final project, with the initial proposal for it being doing on 11/7. Next, they were supposed to have read “Faceless Ecologies” for today. I told them that, if the discussion was good, we wouldn’t do any reflective writing on the article. I broke them into small groups, gave them discussion questions, and told them to discuss the article before coming back and talking about it as a large group. Unfortunately, I was met with mostly silence, and it seemed like very few of the students had read the article. I emphasized that doing the reading for the class is important and had them read the article and answer the discussion questions on their own in class. Those that finished early were instructed to work on their initial proposals and begin doing the reading for Tuesday, two articles on protest signs.
