About the Professional Literacies Project

This project represents our efforts to connect the work of writers in the Bloomington-Normal community to the practices of writing research we want to illustrate and encourage for our community. We began these efforts in 2011, when we worked with the Bloomington NAACP to help them create materials for their organization, and followed up with an interview published in our GWRJournal (when published). Another project involved working with a faculty member at Illinois State to collaborate on an article about how her move from one field to another helped to shape her understanding of writing research (when published). However, in 2014 we began work on a new model for this kind of community collaboration. In collaboration with the GWRJournal, the Professional Literacies project works to bring community members into the writing program as part of an event that an instructor and students can win (we have a drawing) at the beginning of each semester. The event (and writing produced and discussed during the event) is then documented (including video clips) that can be used by other instructors in the program as part of an ongoing discussion about how writing research works in the real world.
