Detailed Schedule:
Day 1: Wednesday, July 11
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Brief group member introductions. Rob leads a discussion on genres and writing research which segues into Chris’s presentation. The first writing assignment is introduced.
2:30 – 3:30 pm
Chris presents corporate governance and Facebook board materials.
3:30 – 4:30 pm
Assignment 1: Students each write a summary/synthesis of the information presented by Chris. Additional details will be provided in a class handout.
Day 2: Thursday, July 12
10:30 am -11:30 am
Group members read each other’s work from the previous day and decide which ones are the most effective and why.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Rob leads a short discussion (with handouts) on some specific genre types as well as a more general review of Joyce’s presentation on writing research. The second writing assignment is introduced. Rob and Chris lead a group discussion on the role of persuasion and persuasive language in business writing.
1:30 – 2:00 pm
Chris provides a brief overview of how to research additional information on complex topics such as corporate governance strategies, and how to identify the most reliable sources.
2:00 – 3:30 pm
Assignment 2: Students will be given a scenario and asked to research and write in the genre(s) they think will best meet the assignment’s needs. This work can be done solo or pairs. Chris and Rob will be available for questions and consultation.
Day 3: Friday, July 13
10:30 am -11:30 am
Students peer review Assignment 2 drafts. Chris and Rob lead a discussion on what these writing types need, how they’re different, and how the students’ research efforts have gone so far.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Students continue work on Assignment 2, integrating the results of the peer review session where appropriate. Chris and Rob are available for questions and consultation.
1:30 – 3:00 pm
Finishing touches on Assignment 2. Discuss what we want to share about our experience, our research, and our writing with the larger workshop group; our group will collectively decide who will present that information and draft an outline for a 15-minute presentation.
