Dear Writing Program Instructors:
This January the Writing Program will host its annual spring orientation, but this time we’re doing things a bit differently…
The event on January 13th, which we’re now calling the “2012 Summit on Writing Instruction” :-), will offer a number of different options for attendees to choose from. These options will provide spaces that are both interactive & reciprocal, where teaching and learning is shared by hosts and attendees. Thus, and in this spirit of reciprocity, we are opening tthese morning sessions to the whole department, because we’d like to collaborate with all the members of our department, who are committed to writing instruction in diverse ways. We hope you’ll invite colleagues in the department who aren’t teaching in the writing program to attend.
We’re calling this event the 2012 Summit on Writing Instruction, and we’ll start with breakfast at 8:30, followed by three sessions with different topical choices. These sessions will last until noon. Dr. Claire Lamonica will be our invited speaker during lunch, when she’ll present an interactive discussion on Teaching Philosophies.
We’re attaching at CFP that explains a bit more about the Summit, including how to submit ideas to host a session (You can also find the information on our website www.isuwriting.com). We encourage you to submit, and we also hope you’ll (in turn) encourage colleagues who aren’t currently teaching in the WP to submit ideas and to attend the morning event. We are excited to hear about the incredible work you are doing in your teaching and we hope that you will be willing to share that information with your colleagues.
Following lunch, there will be a series of “new business” sessions, which will be specific to different instructors and courses – so these meetings are only for instructors who are teaching in spring 2012. These afternoon sessions will include a Course Plan Review for new 101 instructors, A session on the program-wide assessment for ENG 101, a session on the ENG 145.13 student research project, and a discussion to finalize the 145 learning outcomes.
Additionally, we would like writing program instructors who are teaching in spring to join us brunch (10am – 12) on January 12, 2012 in the Bone Student Center for our annual Critical Inquiry Colloquia where we meet with the Communications instructors to discuss the intersections of our courses and position within the critical inquiry group.
Please remember that both the Thursday and Friday events are required (Thursday 10 am -12 and Friday from 8:30 – 4:00) for all instructors who are teaching in the writing program in the spring.
